The Therapist

Mathew Walk-ley is a qualified Play Therapist, registered with the British Association of Play Therapy (BAPT) and working in line with their ethical code of practice.

Before qualifying as a Play Therapist, Mathew worked in special and mainstream schools with children of all ages with and without a range of additional needs.  Throughout his two decades of experience, he observed individuals who might have benefited from additional therapeutic interventions.  Therefore, he trained and qualified with an MSc in Play Therapy in 2019 from the University of South Wales.

Mathew has undertaken additional vocational, undergraduate, and post-graduate training to develop his specialist knowledge of children and young people, particularly those on the autism spectrum, obtaining an MA in Special Educational Needs (Autism) in 2016. Mathew continues participating in training and development opportunities to enhance his practice and is part-way through qualifying with a Diploma in Sand Play (completion in 2024).

Mathew believes relationships are crucial to understanding and meeting people’s needs.  Whilst being professional and aiming to create good trusting relationships, he also aims to be himself within them – a fun, friendly, determined, likeable, and motivated individual with whom he hopes individuals, families, and professionals feel safe and secure openly talking about their feelings and emotions.  He believes that to truly support the individual(s), everyone needs to come and work together, which is why he will always strive to work in the way that is best for each individual or family.

Everything depends on inner changes;
when this has taken place, then, and only then, does the world change.
