Sand Play Therapy

In Sand Play Therapy, the sand is held within a sand tray and the individual(s) place miniatures, symbols and toys in the sand to construct their own encapsulating microcosm. The individual chooses what figures to use, and the scene created acts as a reflection of the person’s own life and allows them the opportunity to resolve conflicts, remove obstacles, and gain acceptance of themselves or others. The therapist facilitates the individual(s) to explore the figures in the sand or to play out their story in the sand, which allows a variety of different perspectives to be shown.  Therefore, The therapist can help the individual(s) explore, heal, and develop new skills and self-awareness.  The therapist will use different techniques depending on the age, stage, and needs of the individual, couple, family, or group to guide them through their own therapeutic journey.

Sand Play Therapy is suitable for everyone, whether an older adult or a child.  It is a flexible approach that can be used within individual sessions or for family, couple or group (up to 4 individuals) work if individuals have similar challenges or experiences, e.g. bereavement or addiction.  This group approach can be helpful for professionals, such as Teaching staff, Educational Psychologists, SENCO, CAMHS workers, Social Workers, etc., to explore emotive topics or experiences and solve problems together in a safe and accepting environment.

Typically, when attending Horizon Play Therapy, a sand tray and symbols are always available as part of the ‘playroom’ environment, whether you are a child or an adult.  When undertaking couple, family or group work, a sand tray is provided for each individual alongside collective symbols, but not all ‘toys’ will be available.  A travel play or sand kit is provided for outreach sessions to meet the needs of the individual(s) undertaking therapy.
