Parent and Carers Support

Horizon play therapy provides therapeutic support to parents and carers to help them recognise their and their child’s/teenagers' needs, responses and requirements for support.  The support Horizon Play Therapy provides is tailored to the individual(s) and family's needs and can often evolve in collaboration with and through the therapeutic journey of the family.

Every child or teenager attending Horizon Play Therapy will have their journey supported by the therapist having regular contact with parents/ caregivers and significant others face-to-face, via telephone or online. Some parents and families may recognise that they would benefit from specific family or parenting therapy to support their child, which Horizon Play Therapy can discuss with you and offer an individually tailored block.  In some instances, a child may not seem ready for therapy, are unwilling to attend or may initially engage but then disengage when they reach challenging points in their therapeutic journey.  This can be demoralising for worried parents/ caregivers and other professionals involved.  Horizon Play Therapy sees these ‘refusals’ as a way that the individual communicates their needs, so to respect the person but enable therapy to begin or re-commence, the focus may start or shift to supporting the parents/ caregivers as individuals, a couple or a family group. This flexible approach can help give parents/ caregivers the tools to reflect upon themselves and change the child’s environment so that they feel more able to engage, or this family work may resolve the child’s need for therapy.
